Enrollment Eligibility

When Can You Purchase a Health Plan?

You can buy individual or family health plans during two enrollment periods:

  • Open Enrollment: This is a designated time each year when anyone can purchase an individual or family health plan. It usually runs from November 1 to January 15.

  • Special Enrollment Period: This period occurs outside of the open enrollment dates. During special enrollment, you can buy a new plan or make changes to your existing coverage. This opportunity is triggered by what’s known as a "qualifying life event."

Qualifying Events for Special Enrollments

There are five types of qualifying life events that can affect your health coverage:

  • Loss of Health Coverage
This includes the involuntary loss of health insurance, which can happen due to job loss or changes in eligibility. It also applies to individuals who turn 26 and lose coverage under their parents' plan, as well as those who lose public insurance.

  • Household Changes
Events like marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, or death fall under this category and can impact your health insurance options.

  • Change of Address
If you move, you might lose your current coverage or gain access to new plans. Additionally, you must prove you had qualifying health coverage for at least one day within the 60 days prior to your move.

  • Change in Income
A change in income can make you eligible for different insurance plans, including individual or public programs like Medicaid. Your eligibility for financial assistance may also shift based on your income changes.

  • Other Less Common Changes
Certain events, such as becoming a U.S. citizen or being released from prison, can trigger special enrollment. Check your state’s health insurance marketplace for a full list of qualifying events.

Important Information for Special Enrollment:

  • Your special enrollment period lasts 60 days from the date of the qualifying event.

  • You must enroll in or change your plan within that 60-day window.

  • Proof of the qualifying event is required. We can assist you in determining what documentation you need.
